Last week, we visited the Hermitage in Nashville to tour President Andrew Jackson's plantation. It was really interesting and we all loved the history. Harrison and Declan had a special kids' audio tour that told them interesting stories about the plantation and it's history, which they enjoyed. They also asked lots of questions during the inside tour of the mansion, although I'm not sure that Declan's questions like, "How old are you?" and "When are we going to look in the next room?" were very relevant.
The back of the mansion. The little building to the right is the smokehouse.
This little cabin was used as slave quarters (and later as a house for 'Uncle Alfred'). It is called "Uncle Alfred's Cabin". Alfred remained on the plantation after the emancipation and worked there as a free man until his death.

We explored the grounds of the plantation by wandering along a trail that meandered through the land.
For some reason, Declan thought it would be good idea to stick his tongue on a dandelion!
This picture shows the 'First Hermitage'. Andrew Jackson and his family lived in the cabin on the left and his slaves lived in the cabin on the right while the mansion was being built. Later both houses served as slave quarters.
